Russet cotton grass, Eriophorum chamissonis S84-5027.

Russet cotton grass, Eriophorum chamissonis.

Russet cotton grass (Eriophorum chamissonis) is actually a sedge. Unlike other species in this genus, the stems grow singly (not in tussocks). It grows in wet areas, preferring the acidic, nutrient-poor conditions of peatlands. In Canada, it is found from northern Newfoundland to Yukon Territory. Eriophorum means 'wool-bearing', referring to the appearance of the fluffy, fruiting head.
