Genotype or Geno-hype?
Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 19, 2004

Why is good media coverage of the science of genetics and biotechnology important?

With important technology comes profound social responsibility. The public must be aware and prepared to help guide policy makers, bureaucrats and politicians.

Timothy Caulfield says it's essential to have an informed public and clear communication between the public and policy makers. "Media coverage may have a number of policy implications. First of all, it may have an adverse impact in the ability for the public to participate, in an informed way, in policy discussions. It may also impact the decisions we make as a society about how we use genetic services but also the kind of decisions individuals make about the services they want."

Véronique Morin says it's the duty of the media to engage the public in the debate by keeping them informed and educated. "Reporters are there to ask the questions and if people don't keep pace with the debate, they'll remain ignorant. Ignorance is fatal. Ignorance is dangerous. The media has a duty to help people to develop a taste for science. I'm not saying they should become cheerleaders, but they should ask the right questions."

Alexandra Paul gave an example of why it's important to understand the science behind the issue. While we usually hear about the potential risks of using Genetically Modified Organisms, she pointed out some of the real benefits for other people in other parts of the world. "For some third-world countries they need to grow more food to feed their people. To them, the idea of genetically modified crops is a good thing. They'll resist insects, and increase yields."
