Genotype or Geno-hype?
Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 19, 2004
| "I got the sense that the media was doing a really bad job. They were getting it wrong. They were hyping the stories."
- Timothy Caulfield, Research Director with the Health Law Institute |
Genes are in the news. Whether the story is about genetically modified crops or gene therapy, we keep hearing about genes. What the atom was to the 20th century, the gene is becoming to the 21st.
Because the public gets most of its information on the science of genetics and biotechnology from the media, the following questions must be addressed: Are the media up to the challenge? Are they fair, accurate and balanced?
On May 19 2004, these were the questions put to a panel before an audience of about 55 at the St. Boniface Hospital's I.H. Asper Centre in Winnipeg. This public forum was held in conjunction with The Geee! in Genome travelling exhibition. Participating in the panel were Timothy Caulfield, Véronique Morin and Alexandra Paul. Marc-André Masson moderated the discussion.
