Careers in Genomics

Are you interested in stem cell research? Would you like to follow in Michael Smith's footsteps? Are you fascinated by GMOs? Would you like to find a cure for Alzheimer's? Then maybe genomics is for you.

Genomics is part of the new knowledge-based economy. A discipline of biology, it aims at analyzing the hereditary material of living organisms.

Genomics opens up vast prospects for basic research and applications in medicine, IT, pharmacology, agriculture, and biotechnology in general.

Private and government funding in genomics provide the biotechnology sector with hundreds of millions of dollars.

New knowledge in genomics will give rise to many changes in the job market. Applications of research will spur the development of a wide variety of jobs in the bioindustry, the agrifood industry and diagnostic laboratories, as well as in the health and environment sectors.

Curious about biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, plant technology, bioinformatics or even bioethics? Then perhaps a job in biotechnology is for you.

Biotechnology can be broken down into several sectors of activity:

  • Research and development (R&D)
  • Clinical research
  • Manufacturing and field work
  • Quality assurance and Quality control (QA/QC)
  • Administration and regulation
  • Sales and marketing

Each sector is quite different, rewarding certain skills and personality traits.

Our thanks to the Biotechnology Human Resource Council for enabling us to present you with the career profiles of three people who work in different branches of biotechnology in Canada.
