Careers in Genomics

By combining the field of molecular biology with classical human genetics, Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui prompted a major breakthrough in the field of human genetics, which led to the discovery of the defective gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Tsui focused his research efforts on finding the gene for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). His unique approach of combining the field of molecular biology with classical human genetics put him "at the frontier of disease gene isolation." Following nearly a decade of research, Dr. Tsui succeeded in finding the malfunctioning gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. This discovery, made in his lab at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in September 1989, was a major breakthrough in the field of human genetics.

Today, Dr. Tsui contributes to science by connecting researchers with the resources they need to continue making significant discoveries, in his role as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Hong Kong.

Place and date of birth:
Shanghai, China, on December 21, 1950

Favourite music:
I enjoy listening to arias in operas. My favourite aria is in Puccini's Opera Turandot, at the end of Act I.

Favourite book:
I like to read short stories.

Favourite Subject in High School:
Chemistry

Favourite hobbies:
Collecting matchbooks during my travels

Credo:
Study is important but learning to apply your knowledge is even more important. Set a goal and try hard. There is really nothing unachievable. If you cannot solve the problem by yourself, don't be afraid to ask others for help and always be ready to lend a helping hand.
