Careers in Genomics

Through his leading research in the structures of human proteins, Dr. Aled Edwards provides medical researchers with the tools to explain complex diseases and discover new medicines.

The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a free online database of the three-dimensional shapes of proteins. In his research, and as Director of the international Structural Genomics Consortium, Dr. Edwards has overseen the contribution to the PDB of more than 1000 protein structures. Medical scientists worldwide can access the protein structures mapped by Edwards’s teams to develop new treatments to a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, diabetes and malaria.

Dr. Edwards is Banbury Professor at the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research at the University of Toronto and Visiting Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Oxford. His passion for science communication has led him to be Science Advisor for the award-winning TV science drama ReGenesis.
