Are you interested in issues relating to the Arctic, climate change, the environment, or Inuit culture?

Would you like to know more about these topics? Would you like to help improve the situation?

Apply to be part of the Polar Perspectives Youth Forums for International Polar Year!

This exciting educational opportunity has been taking place at 15 venues from coast to coast to coast in recognition of International Polar Year (IPY).

The youth forums are targeted at secondary-school students in different regions across Canada. These educational programs are full-day events and offer a unique opportunity to learn about:

  • the Arctic ecosystem
  • northern issues
  • International Polar Year
  • climate change
  • Antarctica
  • and much more.

Students with a strong interest in science and environmental leadership are encouraged to apply. Fifty students will be selected to attend each forum.

An Interactive Day

The design of the one-day youth forum is highly interactive, where students are challenged to make meaningful contributions during the forum and beyond. The format includes large group presentations as well as break-out discussion and action groups.

Videoconferencing has been effective in connecting youth in the Canadian Arctic with youth in the south. They have exchanged their thoughts, stories and perspectives on issues related to health, culture, climate change, conservation and sovereignty.

One of the intended outcomes of this educational programme includes the creation of a document of "IPY Commitments" that students will make at the conclusion of their forum.

The Polar Perspectives youth forums will leave an IPY legacy of new knowledge, understanding and interest in the polar regions among Canadians of all ages.

Successful applicants will be sent electronically a pre-forum handbook/package that includes information on IPY, the Arctic, Inuit culture, climate change, and forum itinerary and activities. Students are expected to read this handbook prior to participation in the forum.
