Information and Reservations

Rachel Gervais

Every humpback whale has a unique pattern on the underside of its tail (called a fluke) that allows scientists to recognize individual whales. Scientists have photographed and catalogued thousands of whale tails. Now, every time a whale is spotted, scientists can check to see if it has been spotted before. Using this catalogue they can estimate populations, follow whale migrations and check out who is hanging out with whom!
