Until a little more than 200 years ago, zebra mussels lived only in south-eastern Europe, in the area around the Black and Caspian Seas. But Europeans began to develop navigational waterways and canals, which allowed zebra mussels to spread to many countries during the 19th century. By 1824 they had also spread to London, England. They were spotted in the 1980s in Italy and Greece, as well as in North America. Zebra mussels were first seen in Canada in 1988, in Lake St. Clair (Ontario). |
