Polyphemus Moths
Antheracea polyphemus
The transparent eye-spots on the hindwings of the polyphemus moth are so obvious they inspired its name, which refers to the cyclops Polyphemus in Greek mythology. The conspicuous colouration of these large eye-spots may help defend the polyphemus moth from predators. If a predator reacts to the spots as real eyes, it might not attack because the size and spacing of the eyes suggests an animal that is bigger than the polyphemus moth really is. The spots might also focus a predator's attack, thereby giving the moth more chance of surviving because injuries to its wings are less serious than injuries to its body. The wingspan of the polyphemus moth is 10 to 15 cm, and its habitat ranges from northern Mexico to southern Canada.
