Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus S79-3009.    Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus

Although this Great Horned Owl has a small bird for a snack, these owls can take prey as large as a skunk. Often more than 60 cm long, it is one of the largest species of owls, and it is named for its large ear tufts. These owls live throughout most of North America, and they nest in trees, caves, or sometimes on the ground. To find an owl's nest or roost, look on the ground for pellets of fur and bone. Owls spit them out after they eat the rest of their prey.
