This Northern Cardinal seems to be enjoying the snow; Northern Cardinals do not migrate to warmer places for the winter, so you can hear their distinctive call, a sharp chip sound, all year 'round. If you live in southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, eastern United States or Mexico, listen for its song, and maybe you'll spot one. Both the male, like this one, and the female have a conspicuous crest and a cone-shaped bill. Unlike the male, the female's red colouring is seen only in traces on its wings, crest and tail, while the rest of her feathers are olive-brown.
