Walking the Chasmosaur
What do you do when you have the pieces to the puzzle, but you don't quite know how they fit together? Reach for some tools and apply a little imagination!
The result is Walking the Chasmosaur, a dinosaur movie made on the frontiers of three-dimensional imaging and palaeontological inquiry.
Looking at the fossilized bones of an animal that lived 65 million years ago, one of Nature's palaeontologists Rob Holmes knew that it belonged to a 'new' species of dinosaur, which he named Chasmosaurus irvinensis. What the bones could not tell him, however, is how the dinosaur stood and walked, and what's that enormous frill all about?
In order to explore these questions, we turned to the technology and expertise of our 3D Imaging Centre, and a virtual movie star was born! Alex Tirabasso (our 3D Production Assistant) 'animated' a three-dimensional scan of a maquette (a scale model) of the dinosaur, placing it in a realistic setting that represents its habitat.
You can watch the entire movie at once, or watch each clip one-at-a-time. Make sure you turn your speakers on!
